He stood before a wall of black iron. His hands held fine dust, white as fresh snow. The wind from the north whistled through cracks in the rock. A low hum vibrated against his ribs, coming from the basalt columns standing tall behind him. Years of cold rain and frozen spray had worn their shapes smooth.

He picked up a piece of porous pumice, gray and light as foam from the sea. It was rough at first touch, scraping against his thumb until it felt soft and familiar. With this tool, he gently touched the edge of a mirror shard that had fallen from its place on the high ridge. Frost clung to the glass, white and thin, hiding the silver light that still slept inside.

He breathed warm air onto the cold surface. His breath turned into gray clouds that drifted away. The words rose from his lips: "Rise when the sun is tired." He leaned forward, pressing the glass back into its frame. His fingers moved slow and steady. A flash of pale silver appeared under the frost, bright but shy, as if remembering where it belonged.

He placed the repaired piece into a slot of dark metal, fitting it with steady hands. The whole row of mirrors began to glow again, one by one, until the entire sky reflected back in broken parts that now worked together. No sound filled the air, only a quiet glow that filled the room and made the night feel less deep.

Before long the wind shifted, bringing warmth instead of chill, and the basalt stopped its humming. He stepped back to watch, his coat soft with dust of pumice and old frost falling from the ridge. All that remained was a single bright spot, small and true, waiting for morning while he went inside to rest.
