I sat alone on my grandmother's wet front porch. Rain soaked my knees, cold and heavy, after I dropped the hot tea cup minutes ago. The teapot sat on the table, its handle broken and chipped. I remembered holding it too tight that morning. My fingers pressed hard against the rough wood of the railing, searching for something solid. All I felt was cool wetness against my skin.

Rain had started early, a fine mist that made the air feel heavy and quiet. A single raindrop stuck in the grooves of the wooden railing, refusing to fall, just like I felt myself stop moving after the spill. It clung there, tiny and clear, catching the gray light drifting over our small street. I watched it tremble slightly before sliding down, leaving a dark stain on the varnish that refused to dry quickly.

Inside, my grandmother's soft cough sounded like air pushing through dry leaves. It came faintly from the kitchen, followed by the clink of a spoon against her bowl rim. She had made me that tea, plain water and dried leaves I loved, no sugar or honey. When it spilled onto my shirt, she did not rush to wipe me clean or say "I told you so." She paused, hands resting on the table edge, watching how I stared at my lap while breathing out words that had no place inside.

I lifted the teapot again, felt its weight in my palm, and watched steam curl from its cracked rim. The smell remained—dust, iron, faint vanilla from dried petals—not quite gone but softer now. I wrapped my wet coat tighter around my shoulders, took another sip, and let the warmth travel slowly down my throat. Outside, raindrops pooled at my feet but said little anymore.

In that quiet moment, I saw the spill was not just an accident but a pause between what had been and what might come next. The broken handle did not break the pot's purpose; my fall did not end our connection entirely. We continued, slow and careful, picking up the pieces of the day without needing to fix everything at once. "
