The Dust on the Kept Plate

The Dust on the Kept Plate

An elderly man in a sunken garden refuses to leave his rotting garden gate even after the house has been sold, while rain keeps washing away his footprints.

寓言Level B350 words

The man sits in a metal chair that squeaks when he shifts his weight. Rain falls hard against the garden path, turning mud into a grey slurry that washes away his footprints before he can stand up fully. His hands, rough and lined with old scars, rest on a rusted iron key. It is cold against his skin, damp with the wet summer air. This is Tuesday, November third, and the sky hangs low and heavy over Elm Street.

He taps the key against his knee, creating a dull clink that sounds like money falling into water. Beside the gate hinge, copper pennies are stuck in a crack of rusted metal. They have been there since the house was sold, three months ago, yet they remain as if waiting to be spent. An old woman stands at the window, watching. She does not call out; she simply nods at her shadow like it might answer first, as if movement alone was communication.

The door bell rings, sharp and loud against the quiet morning. No one comes to sound it; perhaps the wind moved a branch. The man gets up slowly, his bones making deep thuds against his joints, and walks to the gate. His boots leave distinct marks in the wet earth: two dark patches that disappear within minutes when the rain returns. He turns the key. It groans once, twice, then gives way with a final creak that shakes the air.

She watches from inside, seeing how he holds the umbrella. It is black, torn at the edge, soaking rain into his grey coat. The garden smells of wet leaves and old soil, sharp and unfamiliar after so much time standing still. He stands beside the gate for another hour, just breathing in the breeze that whistles through the broken fence. At last, he leaves it open again without closing it. That way the wind can blow what little dust remains inside the gate, carrying it toward whatever path comes next.

The man looks at the open gate, then turns his head to look back at the old woman.
