River Stone and Shadow
An old woman waits by the riverbank as the evening mist settles.
Grey mist hung low, covering the water like a damp cloth. Elara sat by the bank. The stones felt cold under her hand. She watched the river flow, a dark line on the muddy ground.
A lantern hung from a branch. Its light hit the water, making ripples flash like broken silver. The air smelled of wet moss and cold water. Elara stayed still. She watched how the light moved on the water's edge.
Then, a shape broke from the dark reeds. A fox. Its fur was the color of burnt orange and deep shade. It moved without sound, like the water took it.
The fox came to the bank. It did not run. It stopped where the mist met the water. It looked at Elara. Its eyes held a still, knowing look.
Elara said nothing. She just watched the animal. The lantern light blinked, and for a second, the fox seemed to disappear into the dark grey. Then, it turned, vanishing into the thick darkness where the trees stood.
The river kept moving. The mist grew thicker around the stones. Elara stayed by the water, the quiet of the night holding the shape of what she saw. The silence came back, heavy and deep.
